London Olympics 2012: Medal roundup 31st July

A total of 15 gold medals were decided in London Olympics on Tuesday, 31st January, 2012. USA and China won four gold medals each, Germany won two while France, South Korea, Slovenia, Kazakhstan and South Africa won one each.

In shooting, the final of men’s skeet event was held. Vincent Hancock of USA won the gold medal, scoring 148 points. Denmark’s Anders Golding won the silver with 146 points. Nasser Al-Attiya won the bronze medal. He scored 144 points and defeated Russia’s Valeriy Shomin in the shootout.

In canoeing, the final of men’s canoe single (C1) took place. The gold medal was won by Tony Estanguet of France, whose time was 97.06 seconds. Germany’s Sideris Tasiadis won the silver with a time of 98.09 seconds and Slovakian Michal Martikan won the bronze, timing 98.31 seconds.

In judo, men’s 81 kg and women’s 63 kg events were held. In men’s 81 kg category, South Korea’s Jae-Bum Kee won the gold, defeating Germany’s Ole Bischof in the final. The bronze medals were won by Ivan Nifontov of Russia and Antoine Valois-Fortier of Canada. In women’s 63 kg category, Urska Zolnir won the gold medal for Slovenia. She defeated Lili Xu of China in the final. The bronze medals were won by Yoshie Ueno of Japan and Gevrise Emane of France.

In diving, Ruolin Chen and Hao Wang of China won the gold medal in women’s synchronized 10m platform event, scoring 368.40 points. Silver medal was won by Paola Espinosa Sanchez and Alejandra Orozco Loza of Mexico, who scored 343.32 points. Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito of Canada won the bronze. They scored 337.62 points.

In equestrian, finals of individual eventing and team eventing were held. In individual eventing, Michael Jung of Germany won the gold medal. Sara Algotsson Ostholt of Sweden and Sandra Auffarth of Germany won the silver and bronze medal respectively. In team eventing, Germany won the gold medal. Great Britain won the silver medal while New Zealand won the bronze.

In gymnastics, USA won the gold medal in women’s team event with a score of 183.596. Russia won the silver with 178.530 and Romania won the bronze with 176.414 points.

In fencing, Sheing Lei of China clinched the gold in men’s individual foil, defeating Alaaeldin Abouelkassem of Egypt by a score of 15-13 in the final. South Korea’s Byungchul Choi won the bronze medal. He defeated Andrea Baldini 15-14 in the bronze medal match.

In weightlifting, the finals of men’s 69 kg category and women’s 63 kg category were held. China’s Qingfeng Lin won the gold, lifting a weight of 344 kg. Silver medal was won by Triyanto Triyanto of Indonesia, who lifted a total of 333 kg. Romania’s Razvan Constantin Martin won the bronze. He lifted 329 kg. In the women’s 63 kg category, Kazakhstan’s Maiya Maneza won the gold. She lifted 245 kg which is a new Olympic record. Russia’s Svetlana Tsarukaeva won the silver with 237 kg and Christine Gerard won the bronze with 236 kg.

In swimming, four finals were held, two each for men and women. In men’s 200m butterfly race, Chad le Clos of South Africa was the winner with a time of 1 minute, 52.96 seconds. He created a new African record. Michael Phelps of USA was close second with a time of 1:53.01. Bronze medal was won by Takeshi Matsuda of Japan, who timed 1 minute, 53.21 seconds. In men’s 4x200m freestyle relay, USA won the gold with a time of 6:59.70. France won the silver with a time of 7:02.77 and China won the bronze with a time of 7:06.30.

In women’s 200m freestyle, Allison Schmitt of USA won the gold and created a new Olympic record. Her time was 1 minute, 53.61 seconds. Camille Muffat of France won the silver and Bronte Barratt of Australia won the bronze. Their time was 1:55.58 and 1:55.81 respectively. In women’s 200m individual medley, China’s Shiwen Ye won the gold medal with a time of 2:07.57, creating a new Olympic record. Alicia Coutts of Australia won the silver. Her time was 2:08.15. The bronze medal was won by Caitlin Leverenz of USA, whose time was 2:08.95.
