While the 13 Nigerians were deported for various criminal offences, ranging from armed robbery, drug trafficking, forgery and illegal migration, 14 others were cleared of any criminal act after investigations by joint security operatives.
The deportees, who arrived aboard a chartered Spanish flight, according to a statement signed by the police spokesperson, Mr. Frank Mba, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), were received at the Airport at 7:30am, by officers from the INTERPOL National Central Bureau, Lagos, following directives issued on August 9, 2012, by the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IG).
Mba said the deportees were transferred to the office of the Bureau, where they were screened to determine their culpability in the allegations against them.
“At the end of a meticulous and painstaking screening conducted by a combined team of officers from the Police, SSS, NDLEA and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), 14 of the deportees were cleared of the alleged crimes, just as no other credible reason was found to have been proffered by the Spanish authorities for their deportation,” Mba said.
He added that the 14 deportees were subsequently released to their relations on bail.
Meanwhile, the other incriminated 13 deportees, he said, were handed-over to relevant agencies, based on the nature of their alleged criminal involvement, as follows: NIS (State Headquarters, Lagos), eight deportees, Adam Garba, Ames Emmanuel Ahmed, Zim Atando, Hassan Idriss, Victor Iyaki Kamar, Mosa Sidi, Alloysius Chimez Chukwuanu, and Charity Agho Ekuase.
Those handed over to NDLEA Headquarters, Ikoyi, are Julius Maikel, Darlington Chinonso Asiuloka, while those handed over to the Nigeria Police (Federal SAARS, FCID-Annex are John Omoputa and John Okpara.
Mba gave the names of the 14 deportees, who were released to their relatives as Osatohamwen Uyigue, Patrick Owiyi, Eboigbe Courage, Ani Obinna, Peace Ugue, Ugwa Okechukwu Ikanize, Moses Salifu, and Loveth Emonvon.
Others are Osas James Oduware, Festus Enabulele, Godspower Eigbedion, Chuks Etumudor, Oghogho Osawanye, and Anthony Umeh.
While assuring the deportees that due process will be strictly followed in handling their cases, the IG, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, advised Nigerians in Diaspora to be mindful of their activities and respect the laws and culture of their host countries.
He also advised Nigerian youths desiring to travel abroad to ensure that reasons for their journeys are legitimate and that all laid down procedures are followed, before embarking on such trips.
