A Nigerian-American wonders when the international community will wake up to terrorists’ violence in his native country, especially directed at Christians.

Nigeria’s radical Islamist group Boko Haram is just one of several groups targeting Christians, focusing much of its efforts in areas of the country where Christians are based. The believers’ only offense, according to the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, “is their choice of worship” – and the Nigerian government, says that group, is “pandering” to political interests that refuse to expose the supporters of Boko Haram.

American Family News talked with Pastor ‘Laolu Akande, executive director of the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, who says Boko Haram attacks with seeming impunity.

“What is very clear is that the terrorist insurgents have adopted an attitude [that they] cannot be stopped,” Akande says. “They are behaving as if no one can bring them under control.”

The pastor explains that the attackers are striking in northern and central Nigeria, victimizing Christians or police and military – and the government seems to have no control. “I think the government has lost even the political will to go against these people,” he laments.

The United States has failed to designate Boko Haram as a foreign terrorist group even though it is connected with al-Qaida, and that impacts the view of American allies. Boko Haram is getting large of amounts of money – but where is it coming from?

“One of the answers is that they have their network with al-Qaida and they are being funded by fairly rich individuals,” the pastor responds.

Akande says as long as the international community remains quiet, the blood of Christians will continue to flow – and Nigeria will be steadily weakened by terrorists.
