Tourism Australia posted the picture on their Facebook page alongside the caption "Enjoying a lazy afternoon at Featherdale Wildlife Park *Censored for Facebook".
But the hundreds failed to see the funny side, and more than 1600 comments were left on the site, many raging about censorship.
One furious poster said: "Censoring the reproductive organs of an animal is one of the most stupidest things I've ever seen. Well done Australia!"
Another said: "Why are you censoring a kangaroo? OMG, that's just crazy!
"It looks as though you're trying to turn him into a centrefold instead of it being a normal pic of kangaroo behaviour."
Tourism Australia said the photo was only a bit of fun.
"Anybody who's familiar with our Facebook page, knows we like to have a bit of fun with our posts, and when Featherdale Wildlife Park sent us this cracker of a photo we just couldn't resist sharing it with our fans - in all of its magnificent glory," they explained.
"Or nearly all!"
Featherdale Wildlife Park has since posted a new image of Big Baz in a more modest position, saying: "Big Baz, our KI Kangaroo wasn't too pleased to have his modesty compromised on Australia page over the weekend.
"He has since taken to being a little camera shy in front of visitors."
One Facebook user commented: "Glad your back Big Baz in all your glory and now quite famous!
