Creativity is key and also keep the faith. Yes, it's rough being apart, but harping on the negative can take a toll on the relationship. Instead of moaning that you never see each other, talk about the interesting things you've been doing and ask what he's up to.

Absence for how long? Too long (which is relative from person to person) and the relationship will surely come crashing like a comet out of the skies.
Most cases relationshps that didnt have an very good foundation will fail with distance over time. Even those with good foundations suffer damage and need lots of effort to repair if both parties are sensible enough to.
