A downpour in Zamfara State, has exhumed over 100 dead bodies from their graves and destroyed more than 5,000 houses across five local government areas in the state. Areas affected by the flood includes Gusau, Kaura Namoda, Birnin Magaji, Anka and Bukkuyum Local Governments in the state.
Governor Mahmuda Aliyu Shinkafi, who visited the affected areas promised that he would soon relocate the victims and all people living in the areas to prevent the risk of losing their lives and properties. Shinkafi gave the assurance when he visited Talata Mafara and Bakura Local Government areas, two out of the seven local government areas of the state where four days of torrential rain led to flooding which washed away more than 5,000 houses and several farm lands in the affected areas. In Talata Mafara, over 100 dead bodies were said to have been exhume in the town’s burial ground by the raging flood.
Daily Sun gathered that over 207 houses were totally destroyed and over 50 hectares of farmland and produce worth several millions of naira were washed away. In Bakura Local Government Area, about 370 houses, farmland covering over 30 kilometres and plenty farm produce were destroyed and washed away by the flood. While inspecting the two local government areas Governor Shinkafi symphatised with the people and promised that the state government would do everything to forestall the natural disaster from having negative impact on the people.
“This is a water way and when people block the way, flooding would occur anytime there is heavy rain, so we are suggesting relocating the people to a safer place, to avoid recurrence of this kind of loss of valuable assets of the people,” he said. He added that Zamfara Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA) would assist those affected by the flooding immediately with relief materials. In their remarks, Alhaji Nasiru Galadima and Alhaji Abubakar Sarkin Pawa Dambo, chairmen of Talata Mafara and Bakura local government councils respectively commended Shinkafi for visiting the affected areas with a view to assisting them immediately.
