Bisi Alimi is a UK-based Nigerian gay, who gained notoriety in 2004 when he became the first Nigerian gay man to appear on Nigerian national television as a guest on Funmi Iyanda‘s show New Dawn with Funmi, a talk show on the NTA.
That same year, Bisi had been diagnosed with HIV, and on the show Alimi confirmed his segxwality as an homosegxwal and asked for social acceptance from the public. His decision to come out of the closet generated both admiration and death threats.
Born in the Mushin district of Lagos to parents Raski Ipadeola Balogun Alimi (a Nigerian police officer) and Idiatu Alake Alimi (a university clerk), the renowned gay rights activist, who was once disowned by his parents, relocated to United Kingdom in 2009 and in 2014 he was conferred with British citizenship.
He made headlines across the world last year when he openly got engaged to his partner, Anthony and also announced that he will be getting married to the white boyfriend this year. Though, he didn’t reveal the date of the wedding, Nigerians, especially the LGBT community are really looking forward to the day.
