Hlompho Kekana, who is in the list of players contending for FIFA Goal of the Year award, recorded another cheeky goal using his back heel in their game against Golden Arrows on Wednesday. The African champions dominated the match with a 3-0 thumping of their opponents in the South African Premiership. FIFA named Mamelodi Sundowns’ Kekana, along with Barcelona icons Lionel Neymar and Messi and other 10 scorers this week to compete for the award that pays tribute to the late Ferenc Puskas, the Hungarian football player. In the 50th minute of their Africa Cup of Nations qualification match against Cameroon on March 23, the South Africa midfielder read the opponent’s goalkeeper standing away from the goal line and decided to pull accurate strike from his own half. The ball plunged into the net leaving the goalkeeper dazed and disappointed in himself. He also scored at the Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria against Arrows in the 42nd minute to break the deadlock against Arrows.

Kekana goalkeeper scored against Maximilian Mbaeva after the Namibian goalkeeper brilliantly tipped over his characteristic long-range shot. He took the chance and back-heeled the resultant corner kick into the net. The 31-year-old expressed his sentiments about the goal saying it was a different one compared to his trademark long-range shots. Kekana is one of the five players contending for the award of 2016 Africa-based African Footballer of the Year.

The South African midfielder also added that since no other African player has won the FIFA Goal of the Year award, he has the chance to be the first to bring it home and urged every football fans in their homeland to keep voting for him. The winner will be decided by an online poll. The player added that the goal in Cameroon remains the greatest of his career, but he never figured out his name being on the list of players contending for the Goal of the Year.

When Sundowns won the CAF Champions League in October, Kekana played an important part in the tournament and they ended up thrashing Egypt’s Zamalek with an aggregate score of 3-1 in the final. Playing in the CAF also came with a cost because the champions has only played five games of their Premiership fixtures. The triumph over Golden Arrows was just their fifth game while other clubs have played ten matches.

With Sundowns once at the bottom of the table, recording three consecutive victories helped them jump four places to eighth place with 10 points from five games. Newly signed Sibusiso Vilakazi helped his side to double their lead as soon as the second half started, as Themba Zwane scored their third goals at the 74th minute mark. Wits drew 2-2 at home with the struggling Highlands Park to take over the first place rank from Cape Town City.

Even though Highlands thought they had already won the game, Mothobi Mvala score a dreaded 95th-minute equalizer for the Wits who played most of the second half with ten men after a red card ruled out defender Sifiso Hlanti. Kaizer Chiefs has not won their last four games, with the last one being a 1-1 draw with SuperSport United at home.
