Bayelsa State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arraigned one Oguanisi Akpufu in Magistrate Court, Kolo, for alleged illegal possession of firearms and shooting of one Yusuf Bala during a cultural festival at Otuoke in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.
This was contained in a statement on Saturday in Yenagoa signed by the Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Asinim Butswat.
Akpufu is said to be a nephew of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Butswat said that Akpufu, 45, “accidentally” shot Bala on his left leg during the celebration of the Odumimon Festival at Jonathan’s country home on October 28, 2017.
He said the 42-year-old victim was receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
“The suspect (Akpufu) has been arraigned in Magistrate Court, Kolo, on 3 November, 2017, and he will be subsequently charged to High Court for another offence”, Butswat said.
It would be recalled that the police command had indicated on Monday that the former president’s nephew was arrested in connection with the shooting but was released subsequently.
Commissioner of Police, Asuquo Amba, who confirmed the incident while briefing newsmen in his office in Yenagoa on the arrests of several criminal suspects by the command, said that police investigation showed that Akpufu “accidentally” shot Bala on his leg and thigh.
Amba said that Akpufu was part of the masquerade festival at Otuoke and that he was arrested by policemen attached to the Kolo Divisional Police.
The police chief, however, said the case was moved to the serious crime unit of the state police command in Yenagoa.
