Your Husband Owns Your Body - Presenter Tope Defends Man Who Removed Wife's Womb Without Her Consent

''Your husband has the right to do whatever he wants with your body'' - Presenter, Tope Mark-Odigie speaks on man who removed his wife's womb without her consent.

TVC’s Tope Mark-Odigie has defended the man who removed his wife’s womb with the help of a doctor without his wife’s consent. A Nigerian doctor had shared the story online saying the man didn’t want to have more kids after agreeing with his wife that they would only have 3 and they now have 5, and so connived with the doctor to remove her womb after their 5th child arrived.

Now speaking this morning, one of the hosts of TVC's show, The View, took sides with the man saying he owns her.  Her words;

''We cannot behave like the western world. We are in Nigeria and we are in Africa. We are a people that will tell a man to prostrate for hundred times to marry one woman. We are the one that will ask a man to bring a million Naira, to bring a goat, to buy everything possible because you are giving over that woman unto the man to take care of her, to make decisions for her, as long as you own her. As long as we still live within that rule, we cannot begin to form westernized. We cannot begin to form modernity. We cannot begin to form feminism. Except we want to expunge traditional marriage. So, we are going to do legal wedding which means that I am bound only by the laws of this marriage. Then if my husband does anything contrary to my legal rights, of which we have shared everything in the marriage 50-50. If you want to do culture, do culture. If you want to do modern 21st century family setting, then you focus on that. But you cannot eat your cake and have it. In our country, we have prioritized culture more than any other thing. A man has a right to decide how a woman should look.If he wants her to be slim or be fat he would say add weight. He would tell her I have bought you. I own you. So I tell you how to look. I tell you how I want your body to look. I control your life.''

Yes she may correct when she says a husband controls everything about her wife,but removing your wife womb without her prior consent is totally unacceptable,some men take their wife's as a inferior personal slave,this is so grosteque.

She made her point,but there is also a limit to everything.....,because a husband OWNS his wife according to the traditions over here,doesn't mean that he could take whatever he wants from the woman. Will he take her life because he owns her?

For the sake of human right,  the man supposed to seek the consent of the wife and both will come to consensus. On the contrary, suppose the woman ask the doctor to castrate the man, of course, she has the right to do that. Let us not forget that both man and woman are one and no longer two so said the Holy Bible. The man  even acted in ignorance because there several ways to avoid pregnancy and the doctor has failed in his ethics of profession. He could have advised professionally. In fact, the woman has the right to sue the doctor for damages and the husband for deceit.
Madam Tope, African culture is rich, the western culture has nothing to contribute in the proper management of family. Prior to white wedding (western), traditional marriage was in vogue in African culture and hardly then, you hear of divorce. But, since we have followed the western marriage, the outcome becomes, marry today divorce tomorrow due to lack of respect, no culture value . In as much as the Holy Bible called women 'Helper' does not mean they lost their right; after all, they manage home, they organise the children, praying for their husband success and protecting the man from side chicks. Yes!, the man owns the woman in terms of dressing and beautification likewise the woman, no one owns the other out-rightly but putting heads together and agree on something to avoid letting down on each other and unguarded utterances that may trigger conflict.
Marriage something you cannot predict thus issues concerning it should be handled carefully in order not to mislead couples,it is very sensitive.
I suggest the man should apologise to the wife for  the damage done to her and let the matter be settled amicably. Don't forget that marriage in African culture is for life and for the western , it is a contract. God Bless our Homes!
