How These Nigerian Players Are Faring on the Pitch
It wasn’t that long ago that Nigerian footballers were few and far between when it came to playing in the world’s top leagues. There were obvious outliers, like towering striker Nwankwo Kanu, who lit up European leagues during the nineties and noughties, to give all those watching an insight into how talented Super Eagles players could be. Nowadays though, it is not rare at all to see a Nigerian player making good cases to not only be the best player in their foreign team, but in some cases to be the best player in the league in their position.
So, with the 2019/20 seasons now entering the home stretch and nearing their completion, it’s a great time to assess and analyse how some of the most exciting Nigerian talents are doing this year.
Alex Iwobi – Everton
Alex Iwobi is a player who had found himself stagnating at Arsenal after long term manager Arsene Wenger left the club in the summer of 2018. Under the new manager Unai Emery, Iwobi found himself out of sorts. Pundits and coaches saw that all the potential that Wenger had seen in the young forward could be going to waste.
Due to this, Iwobi took the decision to swap clubs, and found himself jumping across the Premier League and signing for the Merseyside team Everton for £35 million in the summer of 2019. The move was seen to be an exciting bit of business by Everton, and there were hopes that Iwobi would flourish under their then manager Marco Silva. Yet history seemed to be repeating itself for Iwobi. Silva was sacked in December last year, with Everton languishing in 18th place in the league.
Iwobi Hopes to Have the Everton Fans Smiling
Victor Moses – Inter Milan
Victor Moses has had a staggering career so far. He is a player who has won the Premier League, the F.A. Cup and the Europa League, all whilst playing in England for Chelsea. Add to that a 2013 African Cup of Nations win for the Super Eagles, and it’s clear Moses must get through a lot of polish when it comes to looking after all those medals.
In the last couple of years though, Moses has found himself not needed at Chelsea, and he was loaned out to Turkish giants Fenerbahçe last season. It seemed that he would stay in Istanbul for the 2019/20 season, but it soon became apparent that Italian manager Antonio Conte wanted Moses to come join him at his new club Inter Milan in Serie A. Moses jumped at the chance to reunite with a manager he had played so well under before, and also to play for such a well renowned giant of a club.
Now that Moses is back playing under Conte again at Inter, the two are hoping to recapture the magic they first had at Chelsea that saw them win the Premier League together in 2017. Conte was the manager who reverted Moses to a wing-back and allowed him to revitalise his entire career as he became a natural in the position, flying up and down the side-lines. Inter are now looking like a formidable team under Conte and experts predict they’ll clinch the Europa League.
Moses has only played a handful of games so far for Inter, but he has looked accomplished and confident in the games he has played. With Inter fighting on many fronts for silverware this season, you wouldn’t put it past Moses to add another medal to his bulging collection come the end of the football calendar.
Wilfred Ndidi – Leicester City
What a player Wilfred Ndidi has become at Leicester City. The battling defensive midfielder recorded the most tackles in the Premier League last season. He has not been slacking off this season either, as he has built upon the individual success and helped his teammates carry Leicester up to 3rd in the league so far. This means that the club would qualify for the Champions League next season, which would be a huge result for the team, and one that not many people were predicting before the season kicked off.
Unfortunately, Ndidi has found himself injured since January and has had to have surgery knee surgery. Since he has been out of action for the English side and their results have suffered, which just highlights how important he is for the team. Hopefully soon he will be back in action and finish off what was becoming a fantastic season for him and Leicester.
