Okunrounmu spoke in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday at the Lecture Series organised by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) with the theme: Intra-Party Democracy and the Emergence of Credible Leadership.
Okurounmu, who was the guest lecturer, said what Nigerians call primary election did not fit the model of primaries conceived to improve intra-party democracy. He noted that primaries in Nigeria are flawed with anomalies which in essence could not produce credible candidates.
“In Nigeria’s party primaries, participation is restricted to a few elite of the party rather than being inclusive of all registered party members and they are riddled with corruption in the form of vote selling.
“Most delegates, because of intimidation, do not have the freedom of choice in casting their votes. It is the use of these types of primaries that have made credible leadership to elude the nation since 1999,” he said.
The best option for now, according to Okurounmu, is the adoption of the British model. The British model, he said, allows the parties to perform their proper functions as already outlined and allows them to sponsor their most trusted and committed candidates whose loyalty to the party and its ideals could be reasonably guaranteed.
Also speaking at the occasion, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, who came as a stand-in chairman of the occasion, lamented that the founding fathers of Nigeria thought that by 50 years, Nigeria should be among one of the best countries of the world. He said it was unfortunate that the country has been bogged down by poor leadership, which he said, has stunted its growth.
