AN explosion suspected to be from a bomb, rocked a government guest house near the Delta State Government House, Asaba, at about 3.00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Two rooms at the entry in the storey building where the explosion occurred had their roofs blown off making those in the neighbourhood to scamper for safety.
No casualty was recorded even as security was beefed up around the Government House.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Charles Muka, told reporters that investigation was on as “we are still expecting the bomb disposal unit to move in.”
The state government, in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Sunny Ogefere, confirmed the explosion.
The statement reads: “At about 3.00 p.m. this afternoon there was an explosion at the Asaba Guest House, Asaba, a commercial outfit of the Delta State Government located near the Government House.
“Two of the rooms upstairs were damaged from the impact of the explosion. There were no injuries and no casualties recorded.
“Security agencies have already moved to the scene of the incident and they have cordoned off the premises and commenced investigations to ascertain the nature of the explosion.”
Meanwhile, the premises of the Plateau State High Court was deserted on Wednesday following a rumour that bombs had been planted in strategic areas of the premises.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that the rumour became rife at about 9.30 a.m. when judges, litigants, counsel and staff of the court took to their heels on hearing that bombs had been in the premises.
It was learnt that within ten minutes of the information, the busy high court was deserted as those within the vicinity hurriedly left while lawyers who had arrived at the high court, sent text messages to their colleagues to stay away from the court.
A cross section of lawyers who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune on phone said they were informed by their colleagues who were at the court, to stay away based on the rumour that bomb had the planted around the premises.
It was also learnt that immediately information got to nearby courts, lawyers and others abandoned the day’s proceedings and headed for their respective chambers.
When Nigerian Tribune got to the court, the entire premises was condoned off by the police while members of the anti-bomb squad were busy searching to detect if bombs were actually planted within the court premises.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Mohammed Lerama, told the Nigerian Tribune that immediately the police got wind of the bomb scare at the court premises, the anti-bomb squad of the command was quickly dispatched to the scene.
Lerama, who said the state police command was on top of the situation, stated that the police in the state had beefed up security in all strategic parts of the state to nip in the bud any act capable of causing a breakdown of law and order.
Speaking with newsmen, the Unit Commander, Anti-Bomb Squad, Jos-Bauchi Command, ASP Abel Mbibi, who led his men to comb the court premises, said after the exercise that nothing in the semblance of bomb was detected, adding that it was still a case of bomb scared.
Meanwhile, the tension over the uncontrolled influx of arms and ammunition into Nigeria continued on Tuesday, as the police in Lagos State made a huge recovery of ammunition on the LASU- Igando road.
A team of highway patrol police officers from Igando Police Station had, on Tuesday, evening recovered three AK-47 rifles, 21 fully loaded magazines and 630 rounds of live ammunition.
The police in the state have since begun investigations into the source of the arms and ammunition, while a manhunt has also begun for the owners of the weapons.
A gang of about five men, which was driving in a Volkswagen Vento car, with registration no CG 17 FKJ, had sighted policemen on the road, jumped out of the vehicles and took to their heels.
The spokesman for the state police command, Frank Mba, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune on the recovery of the arms, stated that the state Police Commissioner, Marvel Akpoyibo, as part of his efforts to ensure a peaceful Lagos State, had ordered for a serious arms mop up in the state.
