The Movement for Democratic Sustainability has warned that Nigeria’s image within the international community will worsen if former Vice President and presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, emerges the president in the 2011.
In a press release issued in Lagos and signed by its Publicity Secretary, Iheanacho Afam, the group said it will be difficult for Nigeria to attract foreign direct investment in the event of a Mr Abubakar presidency giving his alleged involvement in some shadowy transactions with foreign firms. “The former vice president has a lot of credibility issues hanging around him, more so as he has been indicted by a United States Congress committee on account of fraud and money laundering running into millions of dollars,” stated Mr Afam. “No respectable government or corporation will want to deal with a man who still has so much questions to answer regarding graft allegations.”
Regaining their confidence
According to Mr Afam, Nigeria’s image has been damaged by years of corruption and bad leadership. “The country is just beginning to enjoy some confidence and trust now,” he said. “Our banking system has just regained the confidence of international financial institutions, and the international community is restoring hope in our democracy. Why should we throw away the opportunity to make progress by allowing someone who has questions to answer in the international community to contest at all? No nation can exist independent of another. The world has become a global village, nations corporate with each other to further trade and diplomacy and put an end to terrorism. Atiku cannot be trusted by our international allies to run a transparent government and fight corruption as long as he has graft allegations hanging on his neck.”
The group also expressed dismay with what it calls the divisive politics being played by some northern statesmen to force Mr Atiku on Nigerians. “It amounts to the highest political heist that a so called group of wise men decided to abridge to themselves the rights of the good people of northern Nigeria to self determination, by choosing a candidate without recourse to the generality of the people,” stated Mr Afam. The group therefore called on Nigerians who are defenders of democracy to rise up against what it called divisive, self-serving bread and butter politics and politicians and reaffirm commitment to build one Nigeria.
