The Oyo State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria, has called on the police to investigate the allegation that the state governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, was stockpiling arms.
Alhaji Lam Adesina, leader of the party, made the call on Saturday, while addressing delegates at the state congress of the party in Ibadan, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
He reiterated his allegation that the governor kept four amoured tanks in the government house and a large consignment of lethal weapons at an undisclosed location in the Oke Ogun area of the state.
Adesina, a former governor of the state, urged the police to investigate the allegations in order to ensure peace and order in the state, “as political campaigns will begin soon.”
“We are law-abiding citizens and we will respect the rule of law, but we will put up a sharp and equal defence to any attempted attack,” he said.
But responding to Adesina’s claim, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Adetunji Ajimuda, said that there were no illegal arms and ammunitions in the state as being alleged.
He said the police was fully prepared to ensure peaceful elections in the state in 2011.
Meanwhile, the congress, which was held under a peaceful atmosphere, produced Chief Akintola Oke as the new chairman of the party, while Mr Wasiu Olatubosun was elected Secretary.
Some members of the executive were returned unopposed.
