Following the protests trailing Governor Godswill Akpabio’s emergence as the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom State, the national secretariat of the party has cancelled his election and fixed today for a fresh primary.
Akpabio, who is seeking a second term in office, was returned as the sole candidate of the party at a primary held January 9 at the Uyo township stadium.
Two other aspirants, Imoh Udoh and Frank Okon, were excluded from contesting the primary, as their names did not appear on the ballot papers.
They reportedly petitioned the top hierarchy of the party in Abuja which resulted in the cancellation of the election. The governor, who was confronted with the complaints when he visited the national secretariat of the party in Abuja, last Thursday, reportedly accepted the fresh gubernatorial primary as canvassed by the two other aspirants in the state.
The PDP national secretariat was said to have immediately fixed today, January 15 for the fresh gubernatorial primary election. Akpabio stated that his accerptance of a fresh primary was borne out of his belief that his policies and accomplishments, coupled with massive state-wide support by the Akwa Ibom people and delegates, demand that his re-election be free, fair and accepted by all. Observers are of the view that Akpabio will win the re-run by the same wide margin even if conducted one hundred times over. He won last Saturday's primary election by over 99 per cent, consolidating his acceptability by a margin far greater than what he achieved in 2007.
