In a decisive move to curb illegal mining activities, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has ordered the immediate closure of a factory suspected to be engaged in unlawful mining operations within the state.
The governor issued the directive during his inspection visit to the facility located in Idi Ayunre, Oluyole Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.
Originally designated for the recycling of batteries and tyres, the factory was found to be illicitly involved in mining activities, contrary to the terms of its operating license.
During the visit, Governor Makinde announced the apprehension of four individuals suspected to be complicit in the illegal operations at the site. These suspects are presently under the custody of law enforcement agencies pending further investigation.
Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Governor Makinde affirmed that those responsible for the illegal activities would face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
The governor expressed concern over the audacity of the perpetrators, highlighting the need for swift and decisive action to address the violation of government regulations.
Preliminary findings revealed the involvement of Chinese nationals in the operation, with indications suggesting their leadership role in the illicit activities. Additionally, it was disclosed that legal representation for the operation originated from Katsina.
Governor Makinde underscored the state government's commitment to reclaiming control of the facility through legal channels, emphasizing that the actions of the factory operators contravene the executive order he signed.
He concluded by affirming the government's resolve to prosecute all individuals involved in the illegal mining operation, signaling a strong stance against such unlawful activities within Oyo State.
