In a devastating incident on Ojo-Igbede Road, located within the Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State, an unidentified male adult met his untimely demise after being struck by a falling electric cable drum.
The unfortunate incident, which occurred on Thursday, shook the community, leaving residents in shock and mourning. According to eyewitnesses and reports obtained by our correspondent, the fatal accident took place during a routine operation involving the transloading of armored cables from a container onto a forklifter.
Sources reveal that as the forklift maneuvered the cables, tragedy struck when one of the cable drums became detached, plummeting to the ground and striking the unsuspecting victim. The man, reportedly engrossed in his phone while walking past the area, was fatally injured by the impact.
Despite immediate efforts to rush him to the hospital, it was lamentably too late, as the victim succumbed to his injuries en route.
Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, with detectives from the Ilemba-Hausa division launching inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. Initial investigations have led to the apprehension of the owner of the company responsible for the cable transloading operation. The individual is currently in police custody, facing interrogation for alleged negligence and failure to implement necessary safety measures.
Confirming the incident, Benjamin Hundeyin, the State Police Public Relations Officer, affirmed that the deceased's body has been conveyed to the mortuary for autopsy and preservation, while a comprehensive investigation into the matter is underway.
The community remains in mourning following the loss of a life in such a tragic and avoidable manner, prompting calls for heightened safety protocols and vigilance in industrial operations across Lagos State.
