In a significant legal development, seventeen individuals involved in internet fraud, commonly known as "yahoo-yahoo," have received varying jail terms after pleading guilty to separate charges filed against them by the Gombe Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The suspects were arraigned before Justices A. Muazu and M.A Sambo of the Bauchi State High Court, where they faced charges related to fraudulent activities conducted online.

Among those convicted are John Yakubu, Adams Ogbu Adai, Anthony Favour, Londima Donendung, Anthony Osai Samuel, John Jerry, Christianah Joseph, Adejumo Faruq, Emmanuel Shammah, Iliya Yakubu, Godfrey Fidelis Namzy, Danjuma Aklahel, Michael Monday Auta, Alphonsus Jeremiah, Banabas Emmanuel, Jerry Emeka, and Solomon Monday.

The charges against them range from attempted cheating by personation to various forms of online fraud, as outlined in the Penal Code.

Upon pleading guilty, the judges handed down different sentences to the convicted individuals, including imprisonment terms ranging from months to years, with or without options of fines.

Some of the convicted individuals, like Anthony Osai Samuel and Jerry Emeka, also forfeited items used in committing the offenses, such as laptops, smartphones, and cars, to the government.

The sentences reflect the seriousness with which the judiciary and law enforcement agencies are addressing cybercrime in Nigeria, emphasizing deterrence and accountability in the digital space.
