The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully apprehended four suspected kidnappers dressed in military uniforms and rescued their victims. This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, ASP Timfon John, in a statement released in Uyo on Sunday.

According to John, the Command received a distress call on May 24 regarding a kidnapping incident at Utang Street by Gibbs Street in Uyo metropolis. The Command’s Anti-Robbery Squad promptly responded, mobilizing to the scene where they arrested the four suspects.

“In its ongoing efforts to ensure safety and security, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspected kidnappers. On May 24, at approximately 23:00hrs, we received a distress call about a kidnapping at Utang Street by Gibbs Street, Uyo. The Anti-Robbery Squad quickly mobilized and arrested the suspects, identified as Abdulkarem Yusuf, Yusuf Waziri, Inbinabo Sunny Iboroma, and Abdulrahman Abbas,” the statement read.

The police spokesperson detailed that the suspects were intercepted while attempting to kidnap another individual, identified as 'Richie', a friend of their initial victim, Abraham Ekpe. The suspects had planned to transport both victims to Odukpani Local Government Area in Cross River.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had previously kidnapped Abraham Ekpe at Ring Road 3, Opposite Cemetery. They demanded a ransom of N5 million, which Ekpe was unable to pay, leading them to target his friend Richie.

During the operation, the police recovered a red Honda Accord with registration number BJ 615 ABC, a handcuff, and a dagger from the suspects.

The swift action by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command underscores their commitment to ridding the state of criminal elements and ensuring the safety of its residents.
