In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raided several nightclubs in Akure, Ondo State, on Saturday, arresting no fewer than 127 suspected internet fraudsters.
The anti-graft agency disclosed that the operation, conducted in the early hours of Saturday, was based on credible intelligence aimed at apprehending the suspects. The raid targeted a party dubbed the "Yahoo Party," reportedly organized by the alleged fraudsters.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the suspects were nabbed during a sting operation at Signature and Abah Clubs in Akure. Contrary to rumors, Oyewale clarified that no soldiers were injured during the operation.
“The alleged internet fraudsters were arrested in an early morning sting operation at a 'Yahoo Party' held simultaneously at Signature and Abah Clubs on Saturday, June 8, 2024, in Akure, Ondo State,” Oyewale said. “They had originally planned to hold the party on Wednesday, but moved it to Saturday after realizing we were onto them.”
DAILY POST previously reported that among those arrested were a groom-to-be and his friend, highlighting the wide net cast by the EFCC in their crackdown on cybercrime activities.
Oyewale emphasized that the arrests were the culmination of a meticulous operation, following the suspects' activities closely before making the move to apprehend them. “The arrest was a result of diligent operation, and we had followed them carefully before we eventually went for the arrest. They will be charged in court as soon as investigations are concluded,” he added.
The suspects are currently being held in the EFCC's Ibadan office, where they are undergoing profiling. This operation underscores the EFCC's commitment to combating internet fraud and cybercrime, a growing concern in Nigeria.
