Tochukwu Nwosisi, a US-based Nigerian, has been sentenced to three years in prison by a federal court in Houston, Texas for his involvement in an international advance-fee scheme. This scheme, orchestrated by a group of Nigerians, defrauded victims globally of over $5.6 million. Nwosisi was convicted on March 4 by a jury of conspiracy to commit money laundering and concealment of money laundering.
From at least February 2015 to January 2018, Nwosisi participated in this fraudulent scheme, which involved making deceptive offers of investment funding and inheritances to victims worldwide. His Nigeria-based co-conspirators tricked victims into making substantial wire payments to U.S. bank accounts, falsely claiming that these advance fees were required before their funds or inheritances could be released.
Nwosisi's role in the scheme was to act as a money launderer. He accepted the funds from victims into his U.S.-based bank accounts and then transferred the proceeds to the ringleaders in Nigeria. The case was investigated by the FBI and the Department of State Office of Inspector General (DOS-OIG).
The announcement of Nwosisi's conviction and sentencing was made by Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani for the Southern District of Texas, Special Agent in Charge Douglas A. Williams Jr. of the FBI Houston Field Office, and Special Agent in Charge Christopher Hileman of the DOS-OIG.
US District Judge Alfred H. Bennett ordered Nwosisi to serve 36 months in federal prison, immediately followed by two years of supervised release.
The convict was also ordered to pay $905,945 in restitution
