In a concerted effort to expedite the recapture of escaped prisoners, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has released the database of inmates who fled from the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre.
The escape, which occurred on April 24, 2024, has heightened security concerns and prompted immediate action from the NCoS. The incident was triggered by a relentless downpour that caused significant damage to the facility, resulting in a breach of the perimeter fence and enabling the escape of 119 inmates.
The released database includes detailed information about the escaped inmates, aimed at aiding law enforcement agencies and the public in identifying and locating the fugitives. To date, 23 escapees have been recaptured, with 10 apprehended on April 25 and three more captured later that same day.
NCoS Spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, provided updates during a joint press briefing with security, defense, and response agencies at the defense headquarters in Abuja. “I want to say here that there is a concerted effort by the service to recapture fleeing inmates. I want to put on record that we have been able to recapture 23 escapees so far. We are working hard to release the pictures of the fleeing inmates,” Umar stated.
However, as of Saturday afternoon, June 15, 2024, checks by our correspondent revealed that the NCoS has published the details of only 18 out of the 96 remaining fleeing inmates on their website. The names of the published inmates include Ogbonna Kingsley, Auwal Mohammed, Mustapha Ibrahim, Suleiman Sani, Raphael Kingsley, Abdullahi Babangida, Idris Bashir, Umar Mustapha, and Ayuba Obidience.
Others listed are Lamido Gambo, Garba Fidelis, Mohammed Jibrin, Sylvester Allison, Albert Israel, Edoga Okwudili, Olaiya Stephen, Audo Usman, and Ibrahim Aminu.
The NCoS assures the public of its unwavering commitment to recapturing the remaining escapees and has urged anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the fugitives to come forward.
