The Jigawa State High Court sitting in Birnin Kudu has handed down a landmark judgment, sentencing two individuals to death for the brutal murder of Yakubu Ibrahim and subsequent robbery.
The suspects, whose names were withheld pending further legal procedures, were convicted for conspiring to kill Yakubu Ibrahim, robbing him of his belongings including his phone and money, and abandoning his body along the Kano-Maiduguri Road at Kantoga roadside in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area. The crime was reported to have occurred on August 30, 2021.
During the trial, the prosecution presented a compelling case supported by testimonies from four witnesses and the submission of four key exhibits, which collectively corroborated the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt.
Presiding over the case, Justice Musa Ubale delivered the verdict, finding the defendants guilty on all three counts brought against them. For the charge of criminal conspiracy, each convict was sentenced to life imprisonment. Additionally, they received 21 years of imprisonment each for the charge of robbery, without the possibility of fine.
The most severe penalty was reserved for the charge of murder, for which both individuals were sentenced to death by hanging. The judgment was handed down in accordance with sections 97(1), 298(1)(a), and 221(b) of the Penal Code.
Justice Musa Ubale granted the convicts a three-month window to appeal the decision.
The verdict underscores the commitment of the Jigawa State judiciary to uphold justice and deterrence against heinous crimes, setting a precedent for the legal system's firm stance on violent offenses in the region.
Efforts to reach out to legal representatives of the convicts for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
The judgment marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for Yakubu Ibrahim's family and sends a resounding message against criminal activities that threaten the peace and security of communities in Jigawa State.
