The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of two suspected drug barons, 49-year-old Kelechi Monday Nwaobasi and his 50-year-old sister, Ms. Chinwe Rose Nwaobasi. The agency's Special Operation Unit apprehended the siblings, leading to the seizure of cocaine and methamphetamine worth over N4.1 billion in street value.
The NDLEA's spokesman, Femi Babafemi, revealed in a statement that the arrests followed months of intelligence gathering and were part of a special operation conducted on June 13 and 14, 2024. The raid targeted locations at 3B, Boundary Avenue, Aba, and a residence along Ohia Road, Ohia, Abia State, resulting in the confiscation of 20.76 kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine.
Major Codeine Syrup Warehouse Uncovered in Lagos
In a related development, NDLEA operatives in Lagos State uncovered a large warehouse stocked with codeine-based syrup. The facility, located in the Comfort Oboh area of Kirikiri, was raided on June 10, 2024. During the operation, four individuals connected with the importation and distribution of the opioid were arrested.
The suspects, identified as Kingsley Amanambu Obumneke, 38; Emeka Emmanuel, 48; Bornaventure Ugochukwu, 59; and Martin Dike, 56, were detained, and a total of 82,000 bottles of codeine syrup, valued at more than N600 million, were seized. Additionally, a Toyota Tacuma truck and two buses used for distributing the substance were recovered from the premises.
The NDLEA continues to intensify its efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse, with these operations highlighting the agency's commitment to curbing the illegal drug trade in Nigeria.
