Tragedy struck Labinkulu village, Moniya in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, as Abass Olalere, a 24-year-old man, was brutally butchered to death by a gang of twelve assailants in a shocking home invasion.
According to investigations by PUNCH Online, the incident occurred on Thursday night around 9:48 pm. The gang invaded Olalere's home, where they viciously attacked him in the presence of his wife and three-month-old son.
When PUNCH correspondents visited the area on Saturday, the community was tense with residents gathered in groups discussing the brutal incident.
Recounting the horrifying ordeal, the deceased’s wife, Omolayo Olalere, tearfully explained, “We were together outside when they suddenly invaded our house. I don’t know them, and my late husband had no disputes with anyone. They broke in, despite our attempts to lock ourselves inside, and used various weapons and charms to ensure his death.”
She continued, “There were twelve of them, three with masked faces. They ransacked our home, leaving destruction in their wake.”
Despite being rushed to Cureland Hospital at Moniya and later referred elsewhere, Abass Olalere succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Speaking to PUNCH, the victim’s father, Jelili Olalere, expressed disbelief over the senseless violence. “My son was a quiet person. I cannot comprehend why anyone would invade our home, destroy our belongings, and brutally murder him,” he lamented.
The family has reported the incident to the Moniya Divisional Police Station, with Abass Olalere’s body currently deposited at the morgue of Adeoyo Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, were unsuccessful as his phone remained unreachable at press time.
The community remains in shock and mourning over the tragic loss of Abass Olalere, calling for justice and increased security measures in the area.
