A disturbing video has surfaced online showing three women violently assaulting a young lady in a bush in Kogi State, drawing widespread condemnation and calls for justice. The video, posted on Facebook by Omera Ugbede Opaluwa on Thursday, June 20, 2024, reveals the brutal attack occurring in the Ankpa Local Government Area.
Opaluwa reported that the assailants accused the victim of spreading malicious gossip about them, alleging that she had been disseminating false information, including accusations of romantic involvements that were untrue.
“They alleged that the victim has been backbiting them, feeding the people around with wrong information about them, accusing them of dating who they are not dating,” Opaluwa explained.
In his post, Opaluwa called for immediate action, stating, “THIS VIOLENCE MUST STOP BY BRINGING THESE CULPRITS TO BOOK. Not just watching this video, take your time to read my words on this.”
He emphasized that his intention in sharing such incidents on social media is to attract the attention of authorities and prompt them to intervene, rather than to bring a bad name to the community or invite public criticism. Opaluwa expressed his frustration at being accused of regional bias when exposing these injustices, asserting his long-standing commitment to defending the oppressed.
"People should know that whenever I expose these kinds of bizarre treatments, there are always some people who beg me not to expose these things, even when I never listened to them because my conviction is stronger than their evil," he said.
The video has ignited a debate on social media, with some defending the actions of the assailants and others vehemently opposing the use of jungle justice. Opaluwa questioned the justification for such violent behavior, asking, “Even if all the allegations leveled against the victim are true, is this the best approach, taking laws into their hands to treat someone's child this way?”
The incident has raised serious concerns about the prevalence of vigilante justice in the region. Opaluwa urged the community and authorities to take concrete actions to prevent such incidents from recurring, warning that failure to do so could result in even more tragic outcomes.
As the video continues to gain traction, the call for justice grows louder, with many hoping that this exposure will lead to accountability and a cessation of such violent acts in the future.
