A devastating road accident in the Emene suburb of Enugu East Local Government Area on Friday evening resulted in the deaths of three passengers and critically injured two others.

The tragic incident occurred around 7 p.m. at Orie Emene Junction when a heavy-duty truck loaded with laterite collided with a mini bus. The mini bus, which was en route from Old Park to Emene, was carrying seven passengers and the driver.

Witnesses reported that while some passengers were able to escape the vehicle, three individuals were crushed in the crash, and two others sustained severe injuries.

Eyewitnesses have raised concerns about the truck driver's conduct, as initial assessments showed no signs of speeding or brake failure. The truck was seen approaching the junction from Adoration Road, which has known obstacles.

Okechi Michael, an eyewitness, expressed disbelief over the accident, saying, "We cannot even believe what happened here this evening. This is a busy junction, and while the current administration has removed speed bumps, the truck did not appear to be speeding and had just crossed a railway line before the collision."

Michael added, "The police have arrested the truck driver. We hope they will not be swayed by any bribes and will ensure he faces charges for manslaughter or more severe charges."

An Air Force personnel involved in the rescue efforts also voiced concerns, questioning what might have led the truck driver to cause such a fatal crash. The incident has highlighted ongoing issues with road safety and the urgent need for responsible driving practices.
