The Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS) has taken a decisive stand against several hotels and hospitality businesses in Owerri, accusing them of intentional tax evasion, which it deems as economic sabotage.
Among the establishments affected are Lavianto Hotel, Titanic View Hotel and Suites Ltd, Heroes Luxury Apartment, Zoey International Hotel, Benconn Hotel, Hotel Ibis Royale, Hotel Arizona Ltd, and Zeeworld Hotel. The IIRS has alleged that these businesses failed to comply with tax regulations despite multiple warnings.
In response, the IIRS's Debt Management and Enforcement Department has sealed off these establishments as a measure to enforce tax compliance.
Remigius Justice Okoye, acting Chairman of the IIRS, explained that the agency had exhausted all other options before resorting to the closures. He emphasized the agency’s commitment to ensuring adherence to tax laws and urged all taxpayers to remit their dues promptly to avoid similar sanctions.
“The enforcement unit will persist in this crackdown until full tax compliance is achieved across the state,” Okoye stated. “This initiative is part of our broader efforts to enhance revenue generation and instill a culture of tax compliance.”
He warned that any further tax evasion by businesses would result in severe penalties, including additional closures and possible legal action. Okoye also reassured the public that tax revenues would be directed towards developmental projects aimed at improving living standards in Imo State.
The IIRS’s move underscores its dedication to combating tax evasion and fostering a more accountable business environment in the region.
