Two suspects have been apprehended in Ibadan’s Amuloko area, Oyo State, after being caught with a human head they exhumed from a grave. The suspects, identified as Mustapha Bello, 32, and Damilare Oladele, 25, reportedly confessed to receiving N5,000 for each head they sold.
The arrest was made by operatives of the Amotekun Corps after a night guard became suspicious of the duo's activities. According to reports, the suspects were spotted around dawn on Monday, carrying a suspicious bag. When the guard challenged them, a struggle ensued, allowing Oladele to escape while Bello was subdued and handed over to the authorities.
Bello, a carpenter from the Labo area of Ibadan, confessed to the crime during an interview with the Nigerian Tribune. He revealed that he was introduced to the gruesome trade by a man named Saheed, who works as a security guard. Bello admitted that they had exhumed the head from a grave in the Ita Ege area around 1 a.m. on the day of the incident. He also disclosed that Saheed, who has since gone underground, would sell the heads and pay him for his involvement.
Damilare Oladele, who works as a barber, was later apprehended after his association with Bello raised suspicions among local security personnel. Oladele confessed to being involved in the operation, stating that he had worked with Bello on five occasions. His role was primarily to keep watch while Bello dug up the graves. Oladele also confirmed that they targeted older, dry graves to minimize the odor during transport.
The duo revealed that they had completed their latest operation in the early hours of Monday at Amuloko in Ona Ara Local Government Area, where they were directed by a man named Afaa, who provided details about a recently buried corpse.
Both suspects are now in custody and are being investigated by the Amotekun Corps. Authorities are also on the lookout for Saheed, the alleged mastermind behind the operation, who is said to have introduced Bello to the trade and acted as the middleman in the sale of the human heads.
