Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully intercepted a massive shipment of codeine-based syrup, valued at approximately ₦6.2 billion on the street. The seizure involved 892,400 bottles of the illicit drug.
According to a statement released by NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi on Sunday, the operation took place at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex in Onne, Rivers State. The drugs were recovered from five containers during a joint inspection carried out with Nigeria Customs and other port authorities on August 14 and 15.
Babafemi detailed that the codeine syrup was packed into 5,337 cartons, with a total weight of 133,860 kilograms. The shipment, originating from India, was concealed within five large containers.
“This significant bust highlights our ongoing commitment to combating drug trafficking and safeguarding public health,” Babafemi stated.
