The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Alozie John, who attempted to take his own life due to a N1.2 million debt.
The Command's spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed the incident to reporters, stating that John, originally from Isielu Local Government Area in Ebonyi State but residing in Umunnachi, Dunukofia LGA, was saved after consuming a poisonous substance in a desperate bid to end his life. The young man was reportedly overwhelmed by a debt of one million, two hundred thousand naira, owed to his supplier of livestock products.
Ikenga explained, “He confessed that he sells live chickens and consumed the harmful chemical due to his indebtedness. Fortunately, he did not experience any severe effects after taking the substance.”
The police also contacted John's mother, who is now assisting the authorities in arranging for her son's evaluation and transfer to a better facility for proper care and necessary support.
This incident highlights the growing issue of mental health and financial stress in society, prompting calls for more robust support systems for individuals facing severe economic challenges.
