The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tijani Momoh, announced the arrests on Saturday in a statement from Abuja. According to Momoh, the action follows a directive from Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police, Arungwa Nwazue, who oversees the Edo and Delta zones. The AIG had ordered a crackdown on illegal arms in the state as the election date approaches.
"On Friday, at approximately 05:00hrs, the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad, led by ASP Mohammed Usman, acting on credible intelligence, carried out a raid in the Ileh community of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area," Momoh revealed. "The squad successfully arrested two individuals suspected of being involved in gunrunning."
During the operation, the police recovered 30 locally fabricated firearms, including 23 single-barrel and seven double-barrel guns, along with one English-made double-barrel gun. The team also seized 13 live cartridges, a giant toolbox, and a drill machine used for manufacturing the illegal weapons.
Preliminary investigations have indicated that the suspects were engaged in the sale and rental of these firearms to criminals, including kidnappers, armed robbers, and cultists, who have been using the weapons to terrorize residents of Edo and surrounding areas.
The AIG has ordered a thorough investigation into the case, with plans to arraign the suspects in court for prosecution, according to DSP Momoh.
In his statement, the AIG urged all law-abiding citizens in Edo and Delta states to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station as they go about their daily routines.
