In a bid to enforce environmental cleanliness, the Lagos State government has arrested six individuals for public urination on a rail track in front of the Nigeria Army Shopping Complex, Arena, Oshodi.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced the arrests in a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday. He noted that the crackdown is part of the state’s ongoing #ZeroToleranceLagos and #CleanerLagos initiatives aimed at promoting a cleaner and more sanitary environment.
“Six defaulters were earlier today arrested for open urination on the rail track in front of Nigeria Army Shopping Complex, Arena, Oshodi,” Wahab wrote.
This incident highlights the state’s intensified efforts to curb public indecency and improve sanitation across Lagos. The government has been keen on addressing such issues as part of its broader environmental agenda.
The arrests come shortly after the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) raised concerns over the vandalization of railway assets within Apapa Port. During a recent stakeholders summit organized by the Nigerian Shippers Council and the NRC, Akinwunmi Oshilowo, NRC’s Director of Operations and Commercial Services, lamented the challenges posed by vandalism and the congestion of trucks, which hinder the operation of locomotives within the port.
Oshilowo highlighted the difficulties faced by the NRC in accessing port terminals, noting that inadequate Marshaling Yards and blocked railway rights-of-way exacerbate the problem. The Lagos State government’s crackdown on public urination is seen as a step towards maintaining the integrity of public spaces, including vital transport infrastructure.
