The State Security Service (SSS) has detained Adejuwon Soyinka, a prominent Nigerian journalist and West African Regional Editor for The Conversation Africa. The detention occurred early Sunday morning at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Soyinka, who previously served as the Pioneer Editor of the BBC Pidgin Service, was taken into custody by SSS operatives at approximately 5:40 a.m. upon his arrival from the United Kingdom on a Virgin Atlantic flight.
As of now, the SSS has not provided any explanation for Soyinka’s detention, leaving colleagues and observers in the dark about the reasons behind the incident. Attempts to reach the award-winning journalist have been unsuccessful, as calls and messages to his phone have gone unanswered.
The situation has raised concerns within the media community, as the circumstances surrounding Soyinka's detention remain unclear.
