Troops from the Forward Operations Base in Potiskum, Yobe State, have apprehended a 40-year-old man attempting to smuggle recently distributed farm machinery out of the state. The arrest was announced in a statement on Sunday by Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (retd), Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Yobe State Governor.
The suspect, identified as Mallam Auwal Sule, was caught with 11 seed planters, which he claimed to have purchased from beneficiaries of the Yobe State Government’s Agricultural Empowerment Program. According to Sule, he bought each item for N40,000 at his shop in Babban Kasuwa, Potiskum, and intended to transport them to Kano for resale.
“The suspect and the recovered items have been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further action,” Abdulsalam stated.
This incident comes on the heels of Governor Mai Mala Buni's stern warning against sabotaging the government's agricultural initiatives. At the launch of the Yobe State Mega Agricultural Empowerment Programme, Governor Buni emphasized the government's commitment to making agriculture profitable and sustainable, warning that any acts of sabotage would be met with severe consequences.
“I hereby direct the security agencies to arrest and impound tractors and other machines crossing the border lines of the state, while such saboteurs are made to face the full wrath of the law,” the governor declared.
