The once-celebrated selection of Prince Lukuman Gbadegesin as the successor to the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, has turned into a bitter dispute, leaving the ancient town in turmoil. Despite initial praise for the seamless selection process by the Oyomesi (the Kingmakers), accusations of a flawed and illegitimate procedure have cast a shadow over the anticipated coronation.
The late Alaafin, Oba Adeyemi, passed away in April 2022, and the Oyomesi, following tradition, selected Prince Gbadegesin as the next ruler. The decision, however, was met with immediate opposition, with critics labeling the selection as a "kangaroo process." The controversy erupted shortly after the kingmakers sent the prince’s name to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for approval.
The backlash has left Prince Gbadegesin distraught. Despite support from allies who assured him the issue would be resolved quickly, months have passed with no end in sight. The ongoing conflict has sparked tension across Oyo town and beyond, with the royal rumble creating divisions within the community.
The Ladigbolu Ruling House, one of the prominent royal families, has issued a stern warning to the Oyo State government. In a strongly-worded letter, they emphasized that any succession process that does not involve traditional Ifa divination would be unacceptable. They urged Yoruba people worldwide to stand against what they see as an attempt to impose a ruler in defiance of Yoruba customs.
"The Alaafin of Oyo is a revered seat in Yorubaland, and it must be filled in accordance with tradition," the ruling house declared, as the succession crisis continues to escalate, leaving the future of the Oyo throne uncertain.
