
No fewer than 10,000 members of PDP and other opposition parties in Akoko South East Local Government in Ondo State at the weekend joined the fold of the Labour Party (LP) in the state.
The immediate past chairman of the local government under the administration of Dr. Olusegun Agagu, Mr Akin Aibinuomo, led his deputy, Nuhu Fatai and the council former legislative members, including Messers Jide Ase, Kola Ajisafe, Adeola Sylvester, Mr. Ayodele Tanimola, Mr. Adesina Ayodeji and Ahmed Abu, and many other former members of the PDP, defected to Labour Party at Isua, the headquarters of the council area. They said with their defection, the PDP was dead in the local government area.
Speaking on their attraction to LP on the occasion, Aibinuomo said the Mimiko-led administration in the state had given a sense of direction to governance, saying such a leadership quality had facilitated the emergence of many people-oriented projects across the state.
Mr Aibinuomo added that the current administration in the state had revamped the health facilities in the council area, built town halls and markets to boost the socio-economic development of the area.
The state Chairman of Labour Party, Dr. Olaiya Oni, who received the decampees into the party, congratulated them on their choice of political party, stressing that the party would not disappoint the people in meeting their yearnings and aspiration.
He assured them of equal opportunity with the old members and urged them to be united and ensure the victory of the party in the forthcoming elections. In his remarks, the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko assured that all credible politicians in the state would soon join the labour party, saying that the party had a lot of laudable programmes that need the support of all and sundry for the purpose of moving the state forward.
He also assured the aged in the state of his administration’s readiness to bring smiles into their faces, saying that data of the aged was being collated to assist government in its programme for them.
His words: “Labour Party is a party of the people, a party that has the interest of the people at heart. We cannot fail in our responsibilities to the people of this state. I want to sincerely welcome our people into the party. I’m excited to see this large number of people joining us today. We have to join hands together to move our state forward.”
