Nigerian activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has shared details of his brief detention at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. Sowore, who returned to Nigeria on Sunday, explained his experience with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), noting that he has been on the government’s watchlist since 1992 during his university days.

Upon his arrival, Sowore’s passport was seized by immigration officials, who claimed there was a notation requiring clarification from Abuja. After being detained for a short period, the situation was resolved, and he was allowed to leave. However, Sowore noticed that one of his bags was missing. He suspects the involvement of the Department of State Services (DSS) but has reported the incident to the airline, as tracking data shows the bag did arrive.
Speaking with News Central shortly after his release, Sowore expressed pride in being targeted by the government, describing his placement on the highest level of their watchlist as a "GCFR of National Awards for Troublemakers." Despite the challenges, he remains committed to staying in Nigeria and continuing his activism.
