Prominent Nigerian journalist Agba Jalingo is in mourning following the tragic loss of his younger brother, one of two soldiers killed by suspected herdsmen in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.
Reports indicate that armed herders launched a violent attack on the Eguma community on October 1, 2024—Nigeria's Independence Day—resulting in the deaths of the two soldiers and seven local villagers.
In a heartfelt message, Jalingo confirmed the heartbreaking news that his brother, identified as AB. CA Agba SS7358, was among the victims. “Once again, tragedy has befallen my family and Bedia village,” Jalingo lamented. “My younger brother, who was part of the Nigerian Navy contingent in Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), was killed during an assault in Agatu LGA.”
Jalingo's statement highlighted the ongoing dangers faced by security personnel deployed in conflict-prone areas, expressing his sorrow and paying tribute to his brother: “May your soul find safe passage.” The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the safety of communities in Benue State amid rising tensions between farmers and herders.
