A 32-year-old man, identified as Lanre Ogungbe, was discovered dead in a hotel room at Authentic Hotel on Soyoye Road in Abeokuta. The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the tragic incident, which has raised concerns and prompted an investigation.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, the discovery was made on Thursday at approximately 2 p.m. The police were alerted shortly thereafter by the hotel owner, who received a report from the hotel manager about a customer who had not been seen for some time.
Odutola detailed the sequence of events in a statement on Friday: “The hotel manager raised the alarm after the receptionist noticed that Mr. Ogungbe had not checked out as expected. Upon entering the room, the receptionist found his lifeless body on the bed and immediately notified the manager, who then informed the hotel owner.”
The police spokesperson further explained that when officers arrived at the scene, they found an empty bottle of “Lakoko,” an alcoholic beverage, alongside a bottle of pesticide known as “Sniper.” “No signs of violence were observed on his body,” she noted.
Following the initial investigation, Ogungbe’s remains were transported to the General Hospital in Ijaiye for examination, where he was pronounced dead. His body has since been deposited in the morgue for a post-mortem investigation.
SP Odutola emphasized that a thorough investigation is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Ogungbe’s death.
