Fela Durotoye, a renowned Nigerian public speaker, has revealed that he worked in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for six months without receiving a salary.
Durotoye was appointed as Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Values and Social Justice in October 2023, but his tenure ended in March 2024.
His Monday disclosure comes after criticism erupted on social media over President Tinubu’s appointment of multiple media aides, including Daniel Bwala as Special Adviser on Public Communications and Media.
A 13-man list circulating online had named Durotoye as one of the President’s media aides, prompting him to clarify his role.
In an opinion piece, Durotoye stated, “Like many other issues in public discourse, social commentary often has the tendency to overgeneralise.
“Broad assumptions may sometimes lead to errors of misconceptions, misstatements, and misinformation”.
He emphasized that his appointment ended in March 2024 and that he did not receive any salary, allowance, or upkeep during his six-month tenure.
Durotoye explained that he had expressed his desire to serve without pay as a condition of accepting the role.
“When I finally accepted the role in October 2023, it was on the condition that I would not receive any salary or allowances,” he said.
He also revealed that he bore all expenses, including rent, utilities, and fuel, without requesting reimbursement from the government.
As his decision to serve without pay sparked mixed reactions, some praised his altruism while others questioned the brief duration of his tenure.
