Professor Kamilu Sani Fagge, a prominent political scientist from Bayero University, has raised concerns over the growing influence of a select group of individuals around President Bola Tinubu, whom he claims are dictating key policies and decisions in the current administration. Fagge suggests that this so-called "cabal" is attempting to push the President to govern Nigeria in the same manner he did Lagos State during his tenure as governor—a strategy he believes is ill-suited for the national stage.
In an exclusive interview with *Daily Trust*, Fagge highlighted the public discontent surrounding the policies being championed by these influential figures. He argued that while such cabals are not uncommon in Nigerian politics, their influence in day-to-day governance appears to be excessive in this case, resulting in policies that fail to meet the diverse needs of the broader population.
“The reality is that a few people are directly influencing the President’s policies,” Fagge said. “Many of these individuals are political allies or even relatives from his time as governor. They are trying to convince him that the policies he implemented in Lagos are suitable for Nigeria, but this has led to hardship for the people. Nigeria’s complexity goes far beyond Lagos.”
Fagge stressed that President Tinubu was elected by Nigerians to serve their collective interests, not those of a small, influential group. He cautioned that the President must resist the pressure of the cabal and focus on the needs of the wider population.
“The President’s responsibility is to the people who elected him, not to a select few. He needs to recognize that governing Nigeria requires a different approach, one that takes into account the diverse needs and realities of the entire country,” he stated.
To move forward, Fagge called on President Tinubu to adopt a more open approach, ensuring that he listens to the people and gains a true understanding of their concerns. He suggested that the President should utilize both formal and informal channels to gather information, instead of relying solely on the narrow perspectives of those within the cabal.
“President Tinubu must be loyal to the people, not to a few individuals around him. He must seek out real, unfiltered feedback from all corners of the nation. There are multiple ways for him to do this, through security agencies, trusted informants, and direct contact with ordinary Nigerians. The sooner the President opens himself up to the people, the better it will be for him and the country,” Fagge concluded.
