A suspected group of armed herdsmen launched a deadly assault on Azege settlement, located in Mbaya, Tombo Ward of Logo Local Government Area in Benue State, leaving thirteen people dead and several others wounded. The early morning attack took place around 7 a.m. on Sunday, devastating the local community and forcing residents to flee.
Witnesses and local officials report that the assailants were heavily armed, opening fire on residents who were preparing for Sunday church services. According to Hon. Benjamin Uzenda, the former Caretaker Chairman of Logo Local Government and a native of Azege, the attack appeared well-coordinated and targeted defenseless villagers. "They were armed with sophisticated weapons and immediately opened fire, even targeting women and children," Uzenda stated, recounting the scene.
Sources indicate that the attackers not only shot residents but also engaged in brutal assaults, with some victims reportedly butchered after being shot. By the time security forces arrived, the assailants had fled, leaving behind widespread destruction, burned homes, and devastated farmlands. Survivors were taken to Ayilamo Primary Health Center, where medical personnel tended to gunshot wounds.
This attack is not an isolated incident; Azege and nearby areas, including Ayilamo, have endured multiple violent encounters in recent months. Residents have expressed growing fear and frustration as local authorities struggle to secure the region. The Chairman of Logo Local Government, Hon. Clement, has reportedly organized a visit to the affected area to assess the damage and discuss security measures.
As of press time, Azege remains in shock, with many residents abandoning their homes in search of safety amid fears of further violence.
