The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the immediate withdrawal of the controversial tax bills currently before the National Assembly, citing concerns over the impact they could have on the welfare of Nigerian workers.

In his New Year message to the nation, NLC President Joe Ajaero stressed the importance of protecting the economic interests of workers and the general populace. Ajaero urged the Federal Government to prioritize the well-being of citizens and avoid implementing policies that could further strain the financial situation of ordinary Nigerians.

The statement, titled *“In 2025, Hope is in Our Collective Resolve,”* was delivered on January 1, 2025, and called for greater transparency and inclusivity in government dealings. Ajaero emphasized that any government action should reflect honesty and accountability, ensuring that decisions made in the upcoming year serve the best interests of the people.

“As we enter the year 2025, the Nigeria Labour Congress extends warm greetings to every worker and citizen. The challenges we have faced should not break us; rather, they should fuel our collective will to build a prosperous Nigeria, one that progresses towards development and away from underdevelopment,” the message stated.

The NLC’s strong stance against the tax bills highlights ongoing concerns about the economic policies under the current administration. Workers and unions alike have raised alarms over the potential impact of these bills, fearing they could lead to further hardships for the workforce and their families.
