Nigerian TikToker Destiny Ekhorutomwen, who was arrested by the police on charges of cyberbullying and cyberstalking, has been hospitalized after collapsing while in detention.
Ekhorutomwen, 38, was apprehended in Benin City, Edo State, on January 8, 2025, and later transferred to Abuja on January 10. His bail conditions—requiring four sureties with assets worth N2 billion—have been widely criticized by lawyers and the public as excessive.
Sources reveal that the social media influencer fell into a coma and was rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja. A medical report from Lily Hospitals, signed by Consultant General Surgeon Dr. Eghonghon Raymond on January 14, detailed the influencer’s pre-existing health conditions, including complications from past abdominal surgeries and kidney-related issues.
Ekhorutomwen’s arrest has sparked controversy, with reports indicating that Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, played a key role in the crackdown. The police allege that the TikToker used multiple social media accounts to spread false and inciting content aimed at discrediting the force.
Reacting to the development, activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore condemned the arrest, calling for an end to police impunity and urging Ekhorutomwen’s family to reach out for legal support.
The incident has reignited debates over freedom of speech and the alleged misuse of cybercrime laws to suppress dissent in Nigeria.
