Nsidibe Akpan, a native of Ikoni in Akwa Ibom State residing in Nyahasang, a suburb of Calabar is on the run after killing his younger brother, Etim with an iron rod. The assailant and his brother who were both taxi drivers came back from Sunday service without any premonition of the tragedy awaiting them until Etim's wife, whose name was given as Esther raised the alarm over the debris of burnt refuse dumped close to their one room apartment.
According to Glory, a 13 year-old girl whose father's house is adjacent the No 11, Edem Okon Street, where the incident happened, Esther and her husband came back from service to find burnt refuse dumped close to their room and she asked to know who did it since there was a standing rule among the residents that all refuse should be dumped in the swamp adjoining their house.
“Esther's question to know who dumped the refuse close to their room irked Nsidibe, who was in his room after coming back from the church. He came out and demanded to know who was insulting the landlord and that if not that the landlord would not like it, he would have done something to the person. The landlord told him to 'do anything he liked, as he was behind him,” Glory said.
“It was the urge by the landlord that prompted Nsidibe to do 'something' that made him to take an iron rod about two feet long and went after Esther.
“When Esther saw him, she took to her heels and ran into their room where her husband, Etim, was eating rice. It was at that instance that Etim demanded to know why Nsidibe was after his wife even after she had run into the room.
“At that point, Nsidibe allegedly hit Etim on the chest with the rod and he fell and Nsidibe hit him again two times.
“When Etim became unconscious, Nsidibe started to shout 'blood of Jesus, blood of Jesus’, after the thing had cleared from his eyes,” Glory said.
“Nsidibe took Etim into his taxi and drove to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) where Etim was confirmed dead.
“He later pretended that he was going to call their elder brother and disappeared,” Glory concluded.
When Daily Sun visited No 11, Edem Okon Street, the place was deserted. Apart from a cat meowing around there was no sign of life. All the residents, Etim's wife and Nsidibe's wife and other tenants have all disappeared leaving Etim's room, which depicts a scene of a fight open. On the floor of the one room apartment was the rod used to hit the victim, an open small size Bible, spilt salt and some grain of rice while the bed was disheveled.
A source at the UCTH said Etim was brought in dead and “the man who brought him said he had an accident and that he was going back home to call the wife and his elder brother but disappeared into thin air, the body had been deposited in the mortuary,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Etim Dickson said the police are after Nsidibe and that the landlord of the house was in their custody.
