The England man hopes to be back in action around Christmas time after his ankle failed to recover naturally, but he insists he is being treated by "the best two surgeons around."

Arsenal has confirmed that Jack Wilshere will undergo surgery on his right ankle on Monday morning.

The England international has been wearing a protective boot in an attempt to allow his ankle to heal naturally, although the club confirmed that, after a negative reaction to the treatment, Wilshere will now go under the knife.

"We have given Jack time to heal naturally which is important wherever possible with a young player," a spokesman revealed. "The latest scans show surgery is needed. Everyone at the club wishes Jack a speedy recovery."

The 19-year-old aggravated the injury during a preseason friendly for the Gunners against New York Red Bulls although boss Arsene Wenger had previously suggested that the initial damage was sustained while on England duty in June.

Wilshere himself admitted that he hoped to be back in action around Christmas time and insisted that he was being treated by "the two best surgeons around."

"Been in a boot for a month and the bone is not responding. I will have surgery on my right ankle on Monday with the two best surgeons around," Wilshere wrote on his Twitter account.

"Hopefully I will return to action around Christmas time. I am in good hands! Thanks for your support everyone!"
