The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will on Monday embark on a one week warning strike over the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement reached with the Federal Government.

ASUU Warning Strike

The South-West Zonal Co-ordinator of the union, Akin Ajisegiri told Nigeria Newspapers on Friday in Ibadan that the federal government and its powerful elite should be held responsible for this nation’s underdevelopment.

He said the government had refused to implement the condition of service, universities autonomy, pension and the issue of retirement age.

Mr Ajisegiri noted that although the Nigerian university system had suffered deficit in infrastructure, the government’s position remained the same.

The co-ordinator said the 2009 agreement was meant to be a benchmark for reversing the deteriorating state of the nation’s education, however, the government had not attended to the suggestions made by the union on reviving the education sector.

Mr Ajisegiri appealed to Nigerians to prevail on government to live up to its responsibility and said that long after the negotiation was concluded, government had not been showing commitment to the agreement.

He noted that the development of any nation could be faster when its educational is given priority and explained that education was the bedrock of any development.
