IKECHUWKU UCHE (Granada)
The Nigerian striker has had to work hard for his place in the team after arriving on loan from Villarreal last summer, but he is now playing an important part in the club’s survival bid and won the penalty from which Granada got the only goal of the game against Racing Santander. Uche missed an early chance, had a drilled effort from a tight angle blocked by the goalkeeper and when he was felled in the area a minute from time, Guilherme ‘Siqueira’ converted the penalty.
AROUNA KONE (Levante)
Another solid performance from Ivorian Kone in attack for Levante saw him score the second-half goal which earned a 1-1 draw at Valencia. Kone fired home a knock down from Valdo Lopes to equalise and missed a couple of chances on the counter-attack
which could have given Levante an unlikely victory.
ENGLAND
PAPISS DEMBA CISSE (Newcastle)
The Senegal striker’s remarkable start to his Newcastle career continued as he made it seven goals in as many matches by being on target twice in a 2-0 win at home to Liverpool. First he headed in powerfully in the 19th minute before keeping his cool to finish expertly from close range just shy of the hour mark, as the Magpies maintained their bid for European football next season.
EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR (Tottenham)
How Manchester City fans must be fretting over manager Roberto Mancini’s decision to loan the Togo forward to top-flight rivals Tottenham Hotspur this term. He helped Spurs win for the first time in six league matches by scoring twice late on with two well-directed headers in a 3-1 victory at home to Swansea, a result that saw the fourth-placed Londoners open up a five-point gap between themselves and their nearest pursuers for a Champions League place.
VICTOR ANICHEBE (Everton)
Everton manager David Moyes has long been a fan of the talented, if injury-prone, Nigeria striker and his faith in bringing him on as a substitute at Goodison Park was rewarded when he turned in South Africa winger Steven Pienaar’s cross for the Toffees’ second goal in a 2-0 victory against West Bromwich Albion.
SAMBA DIAKITE (QPR)
The Mali midfielder, on loan from French club Nancy, scored what could prove to be a vital first goal for Rangers in a 2-1 win over Arsenal. The match at Loftus Road was all square at 1-1 when, following James Mackie’s pull-back, he lashed the ball home from 12 yards in the 66th minute to give the west London club hope of avoiding relegation.
FRANCE
BAKAYE TRAORE (Nancy)
Mali midfielder Traore scored the opening goal as Nancy beat title favourites Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 to condemn Carlo Ancelotti to his first league defeat as PSG coach. Traore poked home the opener from Yohan Mollo’s pass in the 18th minute, with Mollo netting an 89th-minute winner after Traore’s compatriot, Mohamed Sissoko, had equalised for the visitors with a 50th-minute header.
MAX GRADEL (Saint-Etienne)
Ivory Coast international Gradel put Saint-Etienne ahead at home to Nice with a thunderous deflected shot from 25 yards, only to see his side fall to a 3-2 loss that checked their push for European qualification. It was Gradel’s fourth goal since his move from Leeds United last summer.
KAMEL CHAFNI (Auxerre)
Moroccan midfielder Chafni set Auxerre on the way to a 2-0 win over Valenciennes that took his side within three points of safety, although they remain bottom of the table. Chafni made the breakthrough in style in the 24th minute, slipping past two challenges inside the Valenciennes area before rolling the ball inside the near post with his left foot from 10 yards. Kenyan forward Dennis Oliech made the game safe in the 66th minute to claim his 10th league goal of the campaign.
GERMANY
NANDO RAFAEL (Augsburg)
The Angola striker scored the winning goal just before half-time in his team’s 2-1 victory over Cologne in the German league. The 26-year-old, who has made two appearances for Angola, claimed his first goal of the season by converting a penalty for the hosts.
ERIC CHOUPO-MOTING (Mainz)
Cameroon’s striker scored two second-half goals in Mainz’s 3-0 win at Werder Bremen. The 23-year-old’s brace leaves him with 10 goals this season as he struck in the 48th minute having come off the bench just before half-time and made sure of the three points with a simple tap-in on 74 minutes.
DIDIER YA KONAN & MAME BIRAM DIOUF (Hanover 96)
Ivory Coast striker Ya Konan and Senegal’s Diouf scored in Hanover’s 2-1 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach. Ya Konan struck on 57 minutes after rounding goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and firing into an empty net and ex-Manchester United striker Diouf followed up with the second on 78 minutes to claim his fifth goal in eight games since joining from Old Trafford in January.
ITALY
McDONALD MARIGA (Parma)
The Kenya midfielder scored his first goal for Parma since his return to the club in January. The on-loan Inter Milan player opened the scoring in the 3-1 victory over Lazio with a firm shot from the edge of the box.
KEVIN-PRINCE BOATENG (AC Milan)
The Ghana midfielder was dropped to the bench for the trip to Sicily — perhaps with one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League clash at Barcelona. Boateng replaced Urby Emanuelson in the trequartista attacking midfielder role early in the second half of the 1-1 draw with Catania, but he had little impact.
